My day at DreamWorks

It was fun! I got to hang out with my buddies Anthony Holden and Glenn Harmon today at DreamWorks Animation Studios in Glendale. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and gained a greater desire to get into story. I know I have a long ways to develop as an artist, but I want to, so it's worth it. I also met a couple of new friends. I met Javier Recio (director of La Dama y la Muerte - Spain made short), and Ethan Hegge. They're all story artists at DreamWorks, and they're all really cool people.

I learned some cool things. One is to work hard for what you want. It's worth it to be the best. It's not always enough to be better than you've ever been (although that's certainly great! Personal progression is key to success), but to be successful, you have to learn from the best and work to be even better.

Anthony told me the other day that something he enjoys seeing is when people know how to simplify efficiently. He talked a lot today about emulation and assessment to know WHY someone used a certain line to describe the shape of the leg. He said that dissecting someone's style really gives you the flexibility to utilize it in life when useful occasion may come.

Javier grew up in Spain, and he taught me a lot about working for what you want. There are no animation schools in Spain and there are only about 400 animators total in the whole country. In order to get opportunities, he had to make them. He had to schedule his own commitments and decide where he wanted to go career-wise. He talked about how he and a buddy decided that they wanted to go into the animation industry and they did it. Javier went on to write and direct a short-film (La Dama y la Muerte) and won the Goya award in 2010 and also was nominated for best animated short in the Academy Awards in 2010. He talked about how little opportunity he had, but he made opportunity for himself by working hard and doing what he loved.

These are a couple of things that I learned and am working hard to implement. I encourage anyone who reads this to consider it and allow this advice to influence you so that you can become the best at what you love. Don't get discouraged. Shoot for the stars and maybe you'll hit the moon ;-)

Cheers!
